Bridge Strikes and Height Awareness for HGV Drivers

Why height is a driver skill

A bridge strike can close a railway or road, injure people and end careers. Enforcement and operators treat many strikes as avoidable failures of planning and observation.

This article is driver height discipline. It is not a full Network Rail investigation guide.

Know the number

• Vehicle / trailer plated or marked height — including air suspension raised
• Any temporary increase (tipper body, crane, sheeted load that sits higher)
• Metric and imperial awareness when signs use one system and your plate uses the other

Routing

Car sat-navs will happily send you under bridges that do not clear your trailer. Use HGV-aware routing or company-approved routes for restricted corridors. If a last-mile instruction looks wrong, stop and check before the arch.

At the sign

• Read the restriction early enough to divert
• Do not “try it slowly”
• If you are already committed and unsure, stop in a safe place and get help — do not creep under hoping

After a strike or near-miss

Report immediately under company procedure. Do not drive on and hope nobody noticed. Check for damage that now makes the vehicle unroadworthy.

Driver habit

Height is part of the walkaround mindset: know it before the first junction, not when you see the brick arch.
