Reporting an HGV Accident or Incident: What Drivers Must Do
Summary
Scope
Driver actions after a road accident or serious incident involving your HGV. This is not legal advice for fault disputes.
Immediate priorities
- Stop if safe; hazard lights; protect yourself and others
- Call emergency services when anyone is injured or the road is blocked
- Do not leave the scene when the law requires you to stop and exchange details
Information to capture
- Time, location, weather, lane, and what you were doing (factually)
- Other vehicle registrations, insurer details, witness contacts if offered
- Photos of positions and damage if it is safe — not of injured people for gossip
Notify the operator
Call traffic / compliance as soon as practical. Follow company incident forms. Early, accurate reports protect you better than a late, confused story.
What not to do
- Admit legal fault in a roadside argument
- Post the crash on social media
- Move the vehicle if police/fire have told you to leave it — unless you are directed for safety
Driver habit
Keep a small incident card in the door pocket: operator emergency number, what details to collect. Panic deletes memory; a checklist does not.
