Driver CPC and Attested Copy: What HGV Drivers Must Know

HGV driver CPC card and attested copy documents
Summary
Driver CPC is not a one-off test forever. Keep your periodic training current and carry the proof you are supposed to have — usually an attested copy — when you drive for a living.

What this page is (and is not)

This is a driver-facing reminder about Driver CPC and the attested copy you may need to carry. It is not a full CPC course syllabus and not advice on choosing a training centre.

Driver CPC in one paragraph

Professional bus and lorry drivers in scope of Driver CPC must complete periodic training — commonly summarised as 35 hours in each 5-year period — to keep the qualification current. Without a valid CPC where it is required, you should not be driving professionally even if your vocational licence entitlement looks fine on its own.

What an attested copy is

After training is recorded, drivers often receive or can obtain an attested copy (proof related to your Driver CPC / qualification card status). At roadside checks you may be asked to show evidence that your CPC is in order. Know what your operator expects you to carry: physical attested copy, card, and/or accepted digital proof.

Practical carry rules for drivers

  • Do not leave CPC proof in a locker at a depot you are not returning to this week
  • If you use a digital option allowed for your situation, make sure it actually opens offline / at the roadside
  • Name and details must match the person driving

Common failures

  • Training hours done late after expiry pressure
  • “The office has the paperwork” but you have nothing to show
  • Confusing a completed module certificate with the document officers expect to see

Driver habit

Know your CPC expiry / next training deadline the same way you know your licence and tachograph card dates. Book modules early; carry the proof every duty.
