Summary
Points on a car licence hurt; points on the vocational categories that pay your mortgage can end the job. Know your total, report endorsements, and do not treat “minor” offences as free.

Scope

This article is about penalty points / endorsements on the vocational driving licence that lets you drive HGVs for work. It is not a full guide to every motoring offence or to operator OCRS scores.

Why vocational points hit harder

Many employers and insurers set low ceilings for professional drivers. A total that a private motorist might shrug at can mean you are off the road for hire and reward. Losing Category C / C+E authority is a career event, not a paperwork annoyance.

What you must track

  • Current points total and expiry dates of endorsements
  • Any new fixed penalty or court outcome that adds points
  • Company policy: when you must notify traffic / HR (often immediately)

Common traps

  • Assuming “it was off duty in the car” does not affect HGV work — often it does
  • Ignoring a Notice of Intended Prosecution or fixed penalty until it is too late to manage
  • Letting points surprise the operator at a client audit or insurance renewal

If you are close to a limit

Talk to the operator early. Some firms offer coaching or restrict duties; hiding the problem until a check or claim is worse. Legal advice may be needed for court matters — this site is not a solicitor.

Driver habit

Check your licence status regularly (DVLA view service / counterpart rules as they apply to you). Know the number before the interviewer or roadside officer asks.
