Vocational Driving Licence Points: What HGV Drivers Need to Know

This article is about penalty points / endorsements on the vocational driving licence that lets you drive HGVs for work. It is not a full guide to every motoring offence or to operator OCRS scores.
Why vocational points hit harder
Many employers and insurers set low ceilings for professional drivers. A total that a private motorist might shrug at can mean you are off the road for hire and reward. Losing Category C / C+E authority is a career event, not a paperwork annoyance.
What you must track
- Current points total and expiry dates of endorsements
- Any new fixed penalty or court outcome that adds points
- Company policy: when you must notify traffic / HR (often immediately)
Common traps
- Assuming “it was off duty in the car” does not affect HGV work — often it does
- Ignoring a Notice of Intended Prosecution or fixed penalty until it is too late to manage
- Letting points surprise the operator at a client audit or insurance renewal
