Daily Driving Limit: 9 Hours or 10 Hours Twice a Week?
What the daily driving limit is
Under assimilated drivers’ hours rules (Regulation (EC) 561/2006 as applied in the UK), daily driving time is normally limited to 9 hours.
You may extend that to 10 hours — but only twice between two weekly rest periods. This article covers that daily driving ceiling only.
Normal day: 9 hours
Driving time is the time recorded as driving (including short interruptions that still count within the driving period rules). If you have already used both 10-hour extensions since your last weekly rest pattern requires a reset of those allowances, you are back on a 9-hour daily maximum.
Extension day: 10 hours (twice only)
- You can use a 10-hour driving day up to two times between weekly rests.
- A third “I need 10 again” in that same stretch is not a free extra — it is an infringement pattern.
- Plan the two extensions; do not burn both early in the week without a reason.
What this limit does not replace
Staying inside 9 or 10 hours of driving does not automatically make the day legal. Breaks, daily rest and weekly rest are separate requirements. This page does not rewrite those rules — it only answers how much driving you may accumulate in a day under the daily driving limit.
Practical examples
Example A — normal: You drive 8h40 across the duty. You are inside the 9-hour daily driving limit (breaks/rest still need to be correct on their own rules).
Example B — lawful extension: You drive 9h50 on a day when you still have a 10-hour extension available. That uses one of your two extensions.
Example C — infringement: You drive 10h20, or you take a third 10-hour day when both extensions are already used.
How drivers lose track
- Forgetting that an earlier long day already used an extension
- Assuming “10 hours every day is fine if traffic is bad”
- Confusing daily driving with total duty length or working time
Driver habit that helps
At the start of each week after weekly rest, know how many 10-hour extensions you still have. Before you push past 9 hours of driving, confirm you still own an extension — then use it deliberately, not by accident at 21:00.
