Returning Home for Weekly Rest: What HGV Drivers Should Know
What this article is
A driver overview of the idea that, under the assimilated international framework (often discussed with the Mobility Package), operators must organise work so drivers can return home (or to the operator’s operational base) in connection with weekly rest patterns within defined windows.
It is not a full calendar calculator for every bilateral case and not advice to abandon a loaded trailer mid-route without authority.
Why drivers feel it
You will notice it as planning pressure: long international tours that never touch home get challenged. The legal duty sits heavily on the operator’s organisation of work; your part is to flag impossible rosters early and not sign silent “I am fine forever on the road” patterns.
Driver-safe behaviours
- Know where “home” / base is defined for your contract
- Raise it when a proposed multi-week tour never includes a realistic return around weekly rest
- Do not invent a home return by parking anywhere and calling it compliance
- Keep personal travel after weekly rest separate from driving-time rules unless you are on duty
Boundaries
- Separate from “weekly rest in the cabin” rules
- Separate from Article 12 / unforeseen events
- Does not cancel 56/90 driving limits
Driver habit
When you accept an international run, ask when the planned return-home / base touch is — before you leave, not after three reduced weeklies in a row.
