Mixed Assimilated and GB Domestic Driving in the Same Period

Summary
Some weeks are not pure tachograph work. If you mix assimilated-scope driving with GB domestic-scope driving, you cannot pretend only one rulebook existed. Here is the high-level idea.

The problem this article names

Most weeks you stay entirely inside assimilated tachograph rules or entirely inside GB domestic rules. Trouble starts when the same day or week contains both kinds of driving. This page is a high-level guide to that mix — not a full legal matrix for every exemption.

You do not get to pick the easier rulebook

Time spent driving under assimilated rules still counts under that system’s logic. Time spent under domestic rules still belongs to the domestic framework. Mixing does not let you apply only the parts you like from each (for example domestic duty maths with assimilated rest shortcuts).

Typical mix scenarios

  • Part of the week on an in-scope HGV with tachograph, part on an exempt operation under domestic rules
  • A duty that starts on domestic-scope work then switches to an in-scope vehicle

In both cases the operator should tell you which segments are which and what record each segment needs.

Recording discipline

  • When you are in assimilated scope — card in, modes correct, manual entries as needed
  • When you are in domestic scope and records are required — weekly sheet or compliant tachograph use as instructed
  • Do not leave a blank hole between the two segments

Rest and limits across the mix

GOV.UK mixed-driving guidance exists because totals and rest obligations can interact across the two systems. As a driver, the safe habit is: ask the traffic office how today’s mix is classified before you invent a combined plan. Guessing usually under-protects rest or over-claims available driving.

What not to do

  • “I’ll record everything as domestic because it is simpler”
  • “I’ll ignore domestic duty because I had a tachograph yesterday”
  • Switching vehicles/rules without closing the previous record cleanly

Driver habit

If your job regularly mixes scopes, keep a one-line note per duty: assimilated / domestic / mixed and which record you used. That note saves you when an analyst asks why Tuesday looks different from Wednesday.
