HGV Group 2 Medical and Licence Renewal: What Drivers Must Know
What Group 2 means for you
Lorry (and bus) vocational entitlements sit under stricter Group 2 medical standards than an ordinary car licence. Eyesight, cardiovascular and other fitness rules are tighter because of the vehicle mass and professional use.

Renewal rhythm (typical pattern)
- Many drivers renew vocational entitlement on a cycle that shortens with age (commonly discussed as more frequent renewals from mid-life and annually later)
- Always use the dates on your licence / DVLA record — not a mate’s memory
- Apply early enough for DVLA to process medical evidence (waiting until the week it expires is a common failure)
If the medical or entitlement lapses
You must not drive vehicles that need that vocational entitlement. “The appointment is next Tuesday” does not extend the old certificate.
Notifiable conditions
Some medical changes must be notified to DVLA even between renewals. If your doctor or company medical says a condition may affect Group 2 fitness, treat it as urgent compliance — not optional privacy.

Driver habit
Put renewal deadlines in the same calendar as CPC and tachograph card expiry. Book the medical before peak season, not during it.
