Drivers’ Hours Fixed Penalties: What HGV Drivers See at a Check
What a fixed penalty is here
For many drivers’ hours and tachograph offences in Great Britain, enforcement can offer a graduated fixed penalty instead of (or alongside) other outcomes. Amounts and bands depend on the offence and severity. This article is a driver behaviour guide, not a live fine table.
What you typically experience
- Stop, document and data check (card / VU / prints)
- Questions about gaps, modes, rests and driving totals
- Possible penalty notice, prohibition, or further process depending on findings
Driver conduct that helps
- Produce what you have promptly
- Answer factually — do not invent a story to “help”
- Do not get drawn into operator-policy debates on the hard shoulder
- Note badge numbers / reference details your company asks you to capture
What does not help
- “Everyone does it” / “traffic made me”
- Blaming the office while refusing to show the card
- Deleting, overwriting or “tidying” records after you see blue lights
After the stop
Tell your operator the same day with copies of any notice. Some issues are driver errors; some are planning failures. Either way, silence makes the next analysis worse.
Boundaries
Fixed penalties are separate from licence points for some offences and from operator licence action. One stop can create more than one consequence.
Driver habit
Clean records beat clever roadside speeches. The cheapest penalty is the one you never earn.
