Coupling and Uncoupling Trailers: Safe Checks for HGV Drivers

Summary
Most coupling failures are rushed habits, not mystery faults. Slow down, confirm the lock, connect services, raise legs, and walk round before you pull.

Scope

This article is about coupling and uncoupling articulated combinations — the driver checks that keep the trailer attached and the services working. Load securing and blind-spot reversing are separate topics.

Before you reverse under

  • Trailer height roughly right; landing legs set for coupling
  • Fifth-wheel / coupling area clear of debris; jaws open / ready as your type requires
  • Nobody standing in the squeeze zone between unit and trailer

After you couple

  • Confirm mechanical lock (visual + tug test as trained for your equipment)
  • Connect air / electrical / ABS lines correctly — no crossed colours, no half-on suzies
  • Raise and stow landing legs; secure handles
  • Release trailer brake / apply as procedure requires before moving

Walk-round that catches real faults

  • Look for gaps, unlocked jaws, twisted airlines, dangling plugs
  • Listen for air leaks after build-up
  • Check lights on the trailer before you leave the bay

Uncoupling without drama

Park on firm ground, apply brakes as trained, lower legs, disconnect services, unlock, and pull clear only when the trailer is supported. Do not leave a trailer on soft ground with legs half-wound.

Driver habit

Treat every couple as if an auditor is watching. The two minutes you skip are the ones that drop a trailer or leave you without brakes on the rear.
