Clean Air Zones, ULEZ and LEZ: What HGV Drivers Need to Know

What these zones are

Clean Air Zones (CAZ), London’s ULEZ, older LEZ concepts and similar local schemes restrict or charge higher-emitting vehicles in defined areas. Rules differ by city and by vehicle class.

This article is a driver checklist mindset, not a live tariff table (charges change — always check the official scheme site for today’s truck).

Before you enter

• Is this vehicle’s number plate / Euro standard accepted without charge?
• If a charge applies, who pays it — and is it already set up for this plate?
• Does the route actually need the zone, or is there an approved diversion?

Driver vs office

Operators usually handle accounts and Auto Pay. You still get the fine letter trail if someone assumed compliance wrongly. Confirm for this unit, especially hire/foreign/temporary trucks.

Cameras do not care about “I did not know”

ANPR enforcement is normal. Entering unpaid or non-compliant is treated as a billing/enforcement event, not a friendly reminder chat.

Boundaries

• Zone rules are separate from drivers’ hours and tachograph law
• Congestion Charge (where it still applies alongside ULEZ) can be an extra layer in London — check both if relevant

Driver habit

Treat emission-zone entry like a ferry booking: confirm the vehicle identity and payment status before you commit to the corridor.
